Inflammation: Why It’s Happening In Your Body, And The Natural Remedies That Make It Stop

By Dr. Puja Shah

What’s worse than being sick?

Many will say it’s not understanding why you’re sick.

But those dealing with the frustration of prolonged, unexplained, and seemingly incurable suffering are often in fact linked by the same problem:

Inflammation.

Inflammation is often the symptom of an untreated chronic disease, and it in turn causes symptoms that can cause great discomfort daily – like anxiety, fatigue, weight gain, and body aches.

But what many don’t realize is that inflammation is actually an essential bodily function, related to the process of regeneration and healing.

It begins with an alert to your immune system and stem cells, caused by illness or injury.

In a healthy body, when the healing is complete, the anti-inflammatory system activates and shuts the process down to get you back to normal.

But the problem of chronic inflammation happens when that system doesn’t turn off.

How serious of a problem is this? The World Health Organization (WHO) ranks chronic diseases as the greatest threat to human health, and the prevalence of diseases associated with chronic inflammation is anticipated to increase persistently for the next 30 years in the United States.

How nature helps resolve inflammation

In Latin, the word “inflammation” translates to “set afire”.

In Ayurveda, inflammation is connected with the fire element and Pitta. And the first step to treat inflammation through Ayurveda is to cool the fire with anti-inflammatory foods and herbs such as turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and cumin.

It’s also a good idea to stay hydrated and replace processed, sugary, and fried foods with more fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats.

Besides diet and herbs, Ayurveda also prescribes various anti-inflammatory lifestyle changes, including:

Going out in the sun: sunlight reduces inflammation by nourishing you naturally with the fire element (your agni), while stabilizing your metabolism.

Meditating: When you meditate, include pranayama, breathwork, and gentle stretching as well, all of which allow the body to stay in an anti-inflammatory state.

Fasting once a week: this is extremely effective in reducing inflammation, but only do it if your metabolism is at optimal level and you do not have any other underlying conditions such as diabetes.
